Autopsy Not Clear After Fullerton Police Scuffle

An autopsy performed on the 37-year-old transient who scuffled with police didn't determine a cause associated with death, authorities said.

Supervising Deputy Coroner Ray Esslinger said toxicology along with other tests are needed to find out what led to Kelly Thomas' passing away.

Thomas, who was desolate and had schizophrenia, was removed life support Sunday afternoon at UCI Clinic in Orange, said their father, Ron Thomas.





"It had been a brutal beating, aid Thomas' father, a previous Orange County Sheriff's Division deputy, adding that he or she specialized in arrest as well as control techniques. "My son's injuries had been more indicative of someone using processes to take someone out, in order to kill them immediately.'

The incident happened regarding 8: 30 at night. Tuesday when officers visited investigate reports of a guy trying to burglarize cars inside a parking lot next towards the bus depot in the actual 100 block of Southern Pomona Avenue, police Sgt. Tim Goodrich said.





Officers spotted a believe – a shirtless man having a beard, shorts and a backpack – and also the man began to fight officers because they tried to search him or her, Goodrich said. He added that property present in the backpack led officers to think he had committed whether burglary or was within possession of stolen home.

"We don't know the reason why he was so combative and resistant towards the officers, but it took up to five to six officials to subdue him,' Goodrich said.

Witness Tag Turgeon says he noticed the "out of control" beating from about 25 ft away. He said two officers were along with Thomas, then two others arrived and shot him by having an electronic stun gun. Two more officers turned up and started beating him with a flashlight, Turgeon said.





"He was not moving anymore, " Turgeon stated. "He wasn't resisting. He was face down plus they were beating him about the back of the mind. "

During the scuffle, Kelly Thomas suffered mind and neck injuries and was come to UCI.

Two officers suffered moderate injuries throughout the fight, including broken bone fragments.

Goodrich declined to say when the officers have been positioned on administrative leave. He said police are conducting an interior investigation into the officers' actions and also the District Attorney's Office is actually conducting a criminal analysis.

Thomas is survived through his father, mother, sibling, sister, nieces and nephews.
